About Altunbilekler

Altunbilekler is a growing Ankara-based grocery retail chain, founded in 1994, with a multi-site network of stores, plants and restaurants. It ran its core business on SAP, using it for retail, financial reporting, supply chain management, POS data management and human resources.

The Challenge

As the company grew, availability and continuity became harder to maintain alongside recurring performance problems. These affected the timeliness and quality of reporting to management and, at times, interrupted daily operations. Altunbilekler needed a more resilient platform that could support future growth without raising costs.

Why Amazon Web Services

Altunbilekler evaluated both on-premises and cloud options and chose Amazon Web Services, working with Runibex as its SAP platform partner. The team set out to improve SAP performance, put a structured disaster recovery scenario in place, and lower storage costs, and built a cost model to identify the main savings. The migration was planned and delivered within a 72-hour window, with infrastructure components and environmental integrations migrated together during the cutover.

The SAP on AWS architecture

The SAP environment moved onto AWS with this setup:
  • Compute and operating system. Amazon EC2 running SUSE Linux.
  • Storage and backup. Amazon S3 for backups and AWS EBS SSD volumes for storage.
  • Network and access. Amazon VPC and AWS IAM for network and access management.
  • Monitoring. Amazon CloudWatch for infrastructure monitoring.
  • Cost control. Development and test environments shut down automatically outside working hours.

Services we provided

The engagement drew on these Runibex capabilities for SAP on AWS:
  • SAP Services. Acting as Altunbilekler’s SAP platform partner and migrating its SAP environment to AWS.
  • Cloud environment design. The AWS foundation across Amazon EC2, AWS EBS storage, Amazon VPC networking and AWS IAM access management.
  • Backup and disaster recovery. Amazon S3 backups and a structured disaster recovery scenario.
  • Monitoring.Infrastructure monitoring with Amazon CloudWatch.
  • Cost optimisation. A cost model to identify the main savings, and automated shutdown of development and test environments outside working hours.

The results

Altunbilekler reported these outcomes after the migration:

Backup time
From 12 hours to 2 hours
Restore time
Improved six-fold, to 1.5 hours
Overall costs
Reduced by 35%, helped by automatically shutting down development and test environments outside working hours

The migration was completed within its planned 72-hour window.

In the customer's words

“The most frequently used tabular report FBL5N used to submit its results after 24 minutes before the migration; now, it is well within 150 seconds. The overall costs have been reduced by 35%. To give a hint on how this cost reduction has happened; for instance, development and test environments are not needed to be run at nights or weekends, so they are automatically shut down.”

“Our finance team is very grateful since their time to report delivery has shortened 9-fold. Backup-restore process has been dramatically improved. Backup time has fallen to 2 hours from 12; restore time has improved 6-fold and fallen to 1.5 hours.”
